Job Description

The Director of Development will oversee the full lifecycle of solar project development across multiple U.S. markets. This dynamic, entrepreneurial role requires managing projects from inception through commercial operation while collaborating with developers, utilities, community stakeholders, and internal teams. Effective communication and coordination with both internal and external resources are critical to ensuring projects progress smoothly to successful completion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage site control, interconnection, permitting, and program application processes to drive projects forward.
  • Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, coordinating efforts across internal teams and external consultants.
  • Lead the successful development of projects within the company’s pipeline.
  • Develop and execute development strategies in specific markets, including program evaluation, site origination, and project management.
  • Support project review, screening, and due diligence for acquisitions and co-development opportunities.
  • Work closely with analysts, engineers, finance, legal teams, and clients to develop viable project investment opportunities.
  • Perform scenario analyses to identify and mitigate technical, regulatory, and financial risks.
  • Manage and review financial models, development budgets, and schedules to ensure project success.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations for executive management.
  • Gather market intelligence and contribute as a forward-thinking leader in the renewable energy industry.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in distributed solar project development (1–10 MW); experience with small utility-scale projects is a plus.
  • Expertise in originating, managing, and executing solar or solar-plus-storage projects through the entire development lifecycle.
  • Experience managing interconnection processes with utilities.
  • Familiarity with power purchase agreements and customer offtake arrangements is a strong advantage.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and manage a high-performing team.
  • Solid understanding of environmental and utility regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of energy markets, including ISOs, RTOs, and vertically integrated utilities, is preferred.
  • Proficiency in developing and managing development budgets and financial processes.
  • Strong mathematical and computer skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Project, and Word.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A four-year college degree is preferred.
