The Role

At Matrix Renewables we are looking for a highly motivated individual to assist with our market analytics and commercial integration across development and operational processes. The Associate will assist in the development, maintenance, and operation of Matrix’s internal analytics and market intelligence systems and tools across all power markets and regions in the US. The Associate should be comfortable representing Matrix’ interests with utilities, RTOs, ISOs, vendors and customers. The Associate should have experience applying the techniques of data science and artificial intelligence along with knowledge of renewable energy markets, ISO settlements, commodities contracts (tolls, PPAs, RECs), functioning of utilities, RTOs and ISOs, and the development of renewable energy projects.

Key activities and responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement internal analytics and market intelligence systems with the development, transmission, and investments teams including aggregation of data from multiple sources (e.g., ISO/RTO market data and forward curve providers) and production cost modelling
  • Create and implement various market analytics and further Matrix’s integration into the markets in which we develop and operate
  • Create, implement, and support quantitative models of electricity markets leveraging a wide variety of mathematical and computer science methods and tools including hardware acceleration, advanced calculus, development including C++, Python, JavaScript React, mathematical finance/ programming, and statistics and probability
  • Proactively identify business needs and develop systems and analyses to address them in concert with development and transmission teams
  • Play a key role in integrating insights and data generated by Matrix’s tools and analytics with other key functional areas and departments
  • Assist in developing critical analyses and tools for improving offtake strategies and pricing outcomes for battery storage and renewable energy
  • Provide development with critical data-driven insights on policy/regulatory changes that could impact development siting or other strategies
  • Provide asset management with insights into offtake contract settlement provisions and implementation as well as the theoretical and actual functioning of utilities, RTOs, and ISOs for the selling of products whether energy, RECs, or ancillary services
  • Develop and maintain key contacts at utilities, RTOs, and ISOs for the selling of products whether energy, RECs, or ancillary services
  • Help to implement ESG Company policy at local level in compliance with modern standards, regulations, and best industry practice
  • Report directly to the Director of Origination and Market Analysis

General Skills / Attributes:

  • BS or BA in a relevant field including engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, finance, or quantitative economics
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field strongly preferred
  • At least 2 years of experience focused on renewable energy development and asset optimization or quantitative analysis in deregulated power markets
  • Strong quantitative skills and experience to be able to create and implement quantitative models of electricity markets using a wide variety of mathematical and computer science methods and tools including hardware acceleration, advanced calculus, development including C++, Python, JavaScript React, mathematical finance/ programming, and statistics and probability
  • Strong technical skills required including data analysis, processing, and development of internal-facing web applications; relational database setup, maintenance, and optimization; and cloud-based architecture
  • Strong quantitative, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • High attention to detail with the ability to organize and analyse large data sets
  • In-depth understanding of, and experience in, energy commodity markets and RTOs/ISOs with strong preference for expertise in CAISO and ERCOT
  • In depth understanding of, VPPAs, tolls, and other contract structures for renewable energy and storage assets
  • Strong decision-making skills when faced with uncertainty
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • An ability to perform at a high level in a matrixed organization and manage multiple projects and relationships simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Native English level speaking proficiency required; ability to speak Spanish is a plus
  • Ability to travel to our Miami office and throughout the U.S. to meet stakeholders
