Job Description

Job Summary:

As an Instrumentation Technologist, this position plays a crucial role in maintaining the Waisman Biomanufacturing (WB) facility and its equipment, ensuring the cGMP manufacture of clinical trial products from a diverse range of projects. This position offers a unique opportunity to support the development and manufacture of novel biotherapeutics, allowing you to cultivate a broad skillset. Responsibilities will include general facility maintenance, troubleshooting facility and equipment issues, and performing equipment installation, validation, calibration, and preventative maintenance activities. Additionally, this position is expected to share technical expertise by training staff on specific equipment used for manufacturing and facility operations. This position will also be responsible for drafting equipment-specific documents, such as Installation/Operational Qualifications (IOQs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Waisman Biomanufacturing (WB) operates as a non-profit organization within the Waisman Center, at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. WB follows a business model that integrates multiple cross-functional teams, including business, manufacturing, operations/facilities, quality assurance and quality control, to support contract-based clients. WB specializes in producing drug therapies for early stage human clinical trials.

The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases throughout the lifespan. One of 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, several scientific research cores, and a clinical biomanufacturing facility for the production of pharmaceuticals for early stage human clinical trials. In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous educational and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.

Education:

Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree in a scientific or engineering field.

Qualifications:

The following knowledge and experience is preferred:
  • Proven experience in maintaining and operating a wide range of laboratory and facility equipment, including but not limited to autoclaves, pure steam generators, bioreactors, centrifuges, biological safety cabinets, incubators, freezers, refrigerators, liquid nitrogen dewars and delivery systems, RO/DI water systems, facility automation controls, equipment monitoring systems, HVAC systems.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring systems and understanding of environmental control requirements in cGMP facilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and hands-on experience in the calibration, validation and repair of laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing equipment issues and developing effective action plans to resolve them.
  • Experience working in cleanroom environments, adhering to strict cleanliness and contamination control protocols.
  • Familiarity with and experience in cGMP-regulated environments, particularly within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industries.

The following is required:

  • Exceptional organizational, time-management, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Competence in overseeing the maintenance, calibration, validation, and qualification of both facility and laboratory equipment.
  • Physical capability to perform tasks that involve lifting and moving equipment.
  • Ability to understand and operate various types of equipment, with a strong drive and willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies.

Candidates must be able to move liquid nitrogen tanks (~700 lbs) per facility guidelines.

Candidates must be able to lift up to 80 pounds as well as sustain long periods of standing, walking, stooping and bending on hard surfaced floors.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $56,112 ANNUAL (12 months)

Additional Information:
