Our client is seeking a Director of Transmission and Interconnection to join their expanding team and lead the strategic and operational aspects of their transmission and interconnection processes. This critical role will directly impact the company’s ability to grow and execute its portfolio of renewable energy and standalone storage projects.
The Director will be instrumental in shaping the growth strategy through the identification and execution of transmission and interconnection opportunities. This individual will lead technical and regulatory initiatives, develop strategies for project interconnection and transmission, and oversee the technical execution of these plans.
The successful candidate will work closely with the development team, and external consultants to perform system-level transmission analysis, interconnection studies, and strategic cost assessments. This role is ideal for a highly skilled professional who can navigate both individual project complexities and broader system-level strategies, contributing to the company’s mission of accelerating the clean energy transition.
Key Responsibilities:
- Identify and evaluate new transmission and interconnection opportunities in target markets to grow the project portfolio.
- Collaborate with consultants to perform transmission system studies, including power flow, deliverability, and injection analyses. Develop cost estimates for required system upgrades.
- Provide a comprehensive understanding of interconnection standards, studies, agreements, and processes to support investment decisions.
- Lead efforts to identify optimal points of interconnection and submit interconnection requests with RTO/ISO entities. Monitor and manage interconnection study milestones, cost exposure, and project risks.
- Track and communicate updates on tariffs, interconnection processes, and policy changes in target markets. Monitor key transmission upgrades and recommend optimal timing for interconnection requests.
- Act as the primary representative for Mission with RTOs, utilities, and regulatory bodies. Negotiate interconnection agreements and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders.
- Build internal processes for managing interconnection data, engaging consultants, and analyzing study results. Maintain an internal database of interconnection study outcomes and cost estimates.
- Provide training and mentorship to development team members to enhance their knowledge of interconnection and transmission processes.
- Partner with leadership to improve processes, implement best practices, and ensure the efficient execution of interconnection strategies.
Desired Qualifications:
- Minimum of 6+ years in the renewable energy sector, with a preference for candidates with technical backgrounds or experience in interconnection and transmission planning.
- At least 2+ years of experience managing teams.
- In-depth understanding of renewable energy siting, interconnection processes, and transmission system planning.
- Proficiency in power system modeling tools (e.g., PSSE, PowerWorld, MUST, TARA) and a working knowledge of RTO and utility tariffs, business practices, and protocols.
- Strong skills in managing multiple projects within a portfolio, with the ability to prioritize effectively in a dynamic environment.
- Experience in implementing improvements and problem-solving in response to market conditions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and provide clear, actionable guidance.
